A Bright and Airy Lower Level Retreat for this Growing Family

When this young family of five purchased their new home in the suburbs, they knew the large unfinished basement space presented the perfect opportunity to create a customized hangout spot for spending quality time together. With three active kids, they desired a dedicated space where they could play games, watch movies and just be together as a family.

The Style & Structure team was tasked with transforming this unfinished basement into a bright and airy retreat tailored to this family's needs. With insightful space planning and upscale custom details, we unlocked the full potential of this lower level.

Designing Separate Spaces that Flow Together

To establish different activity areas while maintaining an open flow, the basement was carved into designated spaces - a spacious family room, a private guest suite, and a luxurious bathroom retreat.

The comfortable family room is warmed by a cozy shiplap fireplace with a stone hearth. This rustic yet modern design element establishes the room's inviting vibe. Plush sofas provide ample seating for kicking back to watch movies on the large-screen TV.

A Minimalist Yet Refined Wet Bar

When entertaining, the party naturally transitions to the nearby wet bar. This showstopping feature was customized with rustic white oak cabinetry, stacked subway tile and chic antique brass accents that glimmer against the deep navy blue cabinet color. A mini-fridge, floating shelves and stylish sconces complete the refined yet rustic design.

Guest Suite Outfitted for Everything

On the other side of the basement, a multipurpose guest suite was designed to accommodate overnight visitors while doubling as an exercise room when not in use. A gorgeous mossy green murphy bed folds up into handsome built-in shelving and sconce lighting, hiding away to open up the space for workouts.

Spa bathroom

The adjoining guest bathroom is an absolute showstopper with its seamless glass shower and white oak sauna. The airy, Scandinavian-inspired design is incredibly clean yet supremely relaxing.
