From Closed Off to Wide Open - Our Kitchen Remodel Story

Lexington Project:

When we first met this client, they were ready to fully gut and transform their dated, cramped kitchen after 30 years of raising their children in the home. We gutted everything down to the studs, removing all existing cabinetry, appliances, flooring and the interior wall dividing the kitchen and unused side room. By starting from scratch, we could completely reimagine the layout and interior design to create their dream kitchen. Where a cramped, closed-off kitchen once stood is now a gorgeous, expansive and contemporary gathering space flooded with natural light.

And transform it, it did - by removing that wall, we more than doubled the size of their kitchen island and created an open, airy space for them to continue making memories. Where there was once a cramped kitchen and abandoned side room now stands a gorgeous, expansive kitchen flooded with natural light.

We installed custom cabinetry and updated the look with modern black Shaker-style cabinets in Sherwin Williams Iron Ore. To offset the dark hues, we designed a substantial kitchen island using custom-stained white oak with a quartz countertop in the Calacatta Ultra finish. At over 10 feet long and 4 feet wide, the island makes a stunning focal piece. We accessorized it with three large pendant lights (Maxim Nordic Single Light 20" Aluminum Pendant with Leather Strap) suspended the entire length of the island. Their matte black dome shape and warm leather details complement the mix of modern and minimalist elements.

Floating shelves that are on either side of the generously sized sink serve two purposes: providing open storage and display space, as well as tying in the natural wood tone on the island and bringing it up the wall. Displaying decorative items, such as stacked dishes, cookbooks, and plants, is a wonderful way to use the shelves. The wood floors were in beautiful condition, so we refinished them with a natural clear coat. That added in another element of the soft wood tones.

The backsplash is a gorgeous tile with uneven surface and texture. The incredible color variation of the Look Bianco porcelain wall tile brings a one-of-a-kind feel to the space with artisanal-style charm. This 2" x 10” handmade-look tile features beautiful shades of soft white and cream, while the gloss finish offers the perfect amount of shine. We love this tile so much, that we have the green shade in our Style & Structure office.

As part of the renovation, we had to upgrade our kitchen appliances to high-end models. This couple has waited 30 years, and we needed to do it right! We found everything we needed at Ferguson Showrooms. We are always impressed by their selection of appliances and the helpfulness of their staff.

After careful consideration, we selected the following appliances:

• Refrigerator: Bosch 800 Series - We were blown away by the features of this fridge, including its spacious interior and customizable shelving. The sleek design also perfectly complements our kitchen's modern aesthetic.

• Range: Signature Kitchen SKSGR360S - We opted for this range for its great reviews, impressive performance, and sleek design. We also appreciated its ease of use and intuitive controls.

• Microwave: Signature Kitchen Suite SKSMC2401S - This microwave impressed us with its advanced features, including smart cooking options and pre-programmed recipes. Its large capacity and sleek design also made it the perfect fit for our kitchen.

• Dishwasher: Miele G5266SCVISF - We chose this dishwasher for its quiet operation, energy efficiency, and superior cleaning performance. Its sleek design and customizable interior also make it a great addition to our kitchen.

Through the former wall that we knocked down, are new double French doors now connecting the kitchen seamlessly to the home office. We kept the big picture window to bring in even more light. The clean white walls (Sherwin Williams Heron Plume), oak wood surfaces, and black custom cabinets create a soothing palette that’s both fresh and timeless.

By opening up the floor plan and bringing the light in, we were able to create a kitchen that will suit the needs of this family for years to come as they enter their next chapter of gatherings, dinner parties and memories around the table. Even with a more contemporary, open layout, it still feels warm, welcoming and full of life. See the transformation below with pictures of the finished kitchen and the before pictures.
